Kriegsspiel Play-by-Post: Part 3
Introduction (Part 3)
On 1 Dec I started a Kriegsspiel game. It was a six-player game (three players per side), online, using discord chat for in-game communications and google forms for sending orders and intra-team messages.
I used Table Top Simulator with a Kriegsspiel Meckle map game board for tracking movement.
Each Game Turn was 20 minutes long, consisting of 10 two-minute bounds, for movement and combat encounters.
It was a lot of fun and, according to the players, a big success.
This is the third in a series of posts that will run through the end of the year, outlining each turn of the game. Each post will contain the orders and messages sent as supplied by the players, without editing, to serve as an example of play. All of the gameplay posts in the series will be public, and I would love to see a larger discussion develop around this topic.
A full PDF document of the complete After-Action Report, including some “how to” advice, will be available to paid subscribers.
A public G-folder is available with downloads for all readers:

Blue 1 Blue 2 Turn 8 (0820) "Hopefully by the time you see this message, you will have realized I've already expelled the Red Jaegers from the woods. Their current location (at 0820) is about 200 paces SW of Siebel-Hof, at the south end of the red infantry line.
I've noticed that the red infantry line has stopped attempting to assault Nennweiler from the north, and has been shifting south. One possibility is that the marshy stream in the north is too difficult to cross. But I suspect Red does not know our true objectives, and they may have captured one of my dispatches leading them to think that it is S-H we are after. The tell will be to see whether they attempt to advance upon us (which could end up very badly), or if they continue southward to defend around S-H.
If they do not advance this turn, I am hoping to take advantage of a lull to begin quietly scouting to the south. We (presumably) have Obj1 and can do nothing about Obj3, so the only additional thing we can do is defend Obj2. Also, showing up on their south flank will probably confuse the heck out of them."
**Message**
Blue 4 Blue 2 820 "Objective 3 acheived - Red 'deplanked' own bridge at Neu G when threatened - no troops on east side of river am under pressure from Red main body which is deployed facing me from just south of siebel Hof from S to N Any pressure from their rear from you would be welcome. intend to hold Kipp to last man long live the blue "
> At 0820 you hear cannon fire from the E, two volleys, then at 0828 two more volleys, much closer this time. You see Blue 1 17/VI retire in good order from canister fire on the E side of the woods. AT 0830 the Artillery Battery is operational, and you move it to position to support B1, facing south in an ambush if Red comes West.
I. Cav will continue its previous orders
II. Infantry will straighten the line out anchoring on my far right flank smoothing the line to face towards Red forces. Skirmirshers stay out front. Hold position for now.

Turn 9 0840-0900
The scenario concludes during this turn. the following are the orders from the various players, and afterwards, a bound-by-bound series of pictures.
Red 1 Turn 9 0840-0900
"I & the 1st-3rd of cav, will continue to follow R2&R3 as we have for most of the last hour.
4th and 5th of cav are going to make an end run. Ride. Ride hard. Down the Auf Dem Kipring-Der Weiss Berg road, left at the main crossroads in Nenweiller & seize Karsdorf. 5th is authorised to engage enemy if necessary to allow 4th to continue the mission. 4th is to ride hell-for-leather for the crossing & not to stop for anything.
> "*How long can a horse sustain a gallop? The distance a horse can maintain a gallop depends on their build and physical fitness. A well conditioned horse can easily maintain a gallop for a mile to a mile and a half. At two to two and a half miles most horses will feel fatigued.*"
> I will rule that the cav can move at a steady pace of 700 paces/bound.
Red 2 Turn 9 0840-0900
"7th Hussar to circle behind Division and position on left wing. Aid in advance or harrying, do cav things. No suicidal charges.
Jagers to cross to A2L and aid Right wing of Division in sweeping A2L of any remaining enemy forces. Once victorious, take up skirmishing position at forest edge facing west, fire on enemy artillery if able. Wing advances through wood.
Center to reposition on advance, not beyond cover from A2L vs enemy artillery. Fire on any enemy that presents itself if angles allow, otherwise maintain order with Division. If battle is joined, apply artillery to greatest effect against enemy infantry.
Left wing of Division to advance SW, using the backslope of Derrotheberg to hide from artillery. Forward bn advances on enemy bde sw of derrotheberg with the intent to engage. Remaining bdes use alley to form line under crest of hill. Prepare to engage if enemy does.
It's assumed my baggage is close, we specifically mentioned not having to mention it. If not, bring it up. We aren't running out of ammo or something silly."
Red 3 Turn 9 0840-0900
"@purpledruid Belay all previous orders.
Infantry to hold position oppose any attempts to cross river by enemy, Jagers and Hussars move to A2A, if unmanned destroy bridge. If Manned by enemy surveil and report, if manned by Red fortified position and make preparations to destroy. "
Ø 0840+ Lots of cannon and gunfire to the NW
Ø 0848 Hussars reach edge of stream, discoer it is too marshy for the cav to cross to the bridge.
Ø 0854 Red 3 Jagers take position on bridge, A2A
Blue 1 9 0840-0900
"Intention: Block the advance of Red's southern flank, and keep them off of the summit of der rothe berg.
18th & 19th move SW, towards the summit of der rothe berg, opposite of Red's southern three infantry blocks (not counting the Jaeger), but do not advance into the line of fire of B2's artillery. Maintain a double line (18th 250 paces behind 19th) and fire at will. If the 19th is assaulted and scattered, the 18th is to counter-assault.
North skirmishers continue to harass red's northern flank, with a special goal of sniping R2. But if followed into the woods, make a fighting withdrawal towards B2's artillery. Guard these guns at all costs.
17th is to prevent the Jaegers from attaining the summit of der rothe berg. Skirmishers concentrate fire on the Jaeger's right flank while the main body wheels toward the Jaeger's right flank, advances into firing range, and opens fire. The In the unlikely event the Jaegers attempt to evade, follow them.
Baggage trains return to a position 500 paces east of Nenweiller."
Blue 2 9 0840-0900
"I. Cav at SudenHof will move east along the road to the 5 way intersection Upon arrival there they will take the road E towards the woods and map marking of Ch II. from there they will turn along the road SW and head back to our lines. They have free orders to engage any soft targets they see-baggage trains and ammo carts and any artillery units. Engage other units if they manage to catch the enemy from behind.
> Cav had been ordered to Sellheimer hof, so orders were considered confused, and the cav circled back thru Das Grenzfeld
II One section from the Reserve Battalion will peel off and move to block the bridge over the stream between the Weisse Berg and Auf dem Kiping and keep an eye on the Red Cav on the other side of the stream.
> 1/2 Btn of 16/V moves n to occupy bridge.
other section of the reserve battalion will move up to support the front two battalions. Those two battalion are ordered to move forward with all speed but remaining in cohesive formation in an effort to catch the Red infantry to their front in the flank. Infantry to not move beyond the road that runs East-NorthEast from Nemweiler. And not to enter the woods there. Skirmishers are free to enter the woods though. I will personally ride up and down the line shouting encouragement to the troops and rallying the men as needed.
III Artillery will engage targets of opportunity as they appear and are in LOS. Infantry and cav formations highest priority. Try not to get into counter battery fire with enemy artillery.
IV Ammo trains will resupply units as needed and baggage train will hold positions."
Blue 4 9 0840-0900
"all troops to stand firm - resupply with ammunition
if possible and in range artillery to fire at the red infantry on siebel Hof "
