The rules are designed for Campaign use, as they cover many more options than simply “Death” for the losing combatants, including possibly jumping overboard and swimming ashore!

Grappling and Boarding
Ships that wish to grapple and board another ship must step their mast. If both ships are intent on grappling and fighting hand-to-hand then no dice are rolled, and the ships may be tied together.
